Last fall I wrote a piece for Wild + Free on fermenting with children. It is one of my favorite articles I did for the magazine because everyone in our family helped with the photos, the recipes, and the fermentation! One year later, everyone is gathered around again, making a new ferment: Giardiniera. Jeffrey’s endless enthusiasm for fermentation experimentation is contagious. I think we are raising a whole brood of wildcraft makers and brewers.
After the Giardiniera project, we made wild grape soda: one of our September traditions and favorite ferments!
I adore this tiny man, standing up at the sink, helping Papa with fermentation projects. Give this little boy a sink full of water and a few kitchen utensils and he gladly “help” in the kitchen for at least a half an hour.
Jeffrey is making wild leek kimchi and the whole house smells like spring forest earth. I love this man, and I love to watch him work his fermentation magic in the kitchen.
We now have the makings of five gallons of hot sauce fermenting on our kitchen counters. (Many thanks to a friend for generously providing us with an assortment of peppers!) Jars of spicy peppers are just one of the many brews bubbling in our house.
